The Woman Who Makes Books and Changes Lives

2024 – Documentary

50 min

For over two decades, Barbara Fédier trained a generation of artists in editorial design and bookmaking at the Geneva School of Art and Design, where she founded the first department dedicated to publishing as a creative practice. This film tells her story through the voices of seven former assistants — now artists in their own right — who reflect, with both affection and clarity, on the impact of her singular pedagogy. Their testimonies also speak to the lived reality of making art: chosen or forced exile, family sacrifices, financial precarity, and the difficulty of sustaining a career. Blending personal archives and collective memory, the film paints the portrait of a visionary figure — and of a generation shaped by artistic commitment and the hard truth of survival.
